History of J Suttons
Jerry Sutton established a wooden oar & scull company in 1971 and soon gained an enviable reputation for outstanding quality and service in the hand crafted manufacture of oars & sculls. The early honours for Suttons included the Olympic and World Championship gold, silver and bronze medals and at Henley Royal Regatta, wins at all levels. Many prestigious crews have all used Suttons oars and sculls including Oxford and Cambridge.
In our time we have made almost every type of oar and scull imaginable from 30ft barge oars to supplying the elite of the racing world.
Upon Jerry's retirement, the mantle has been taken up by Mark Stanley who today continues the excellence that was laid down all those years ago.
All of our products are made out of top quality Sitka Spruce, which is checked before using for any flaws that may weaken the product being made by our Mastercraftmen.
The oars & sculls can be fitted with leather or PVC sleeves and buttons. Most of the oars and sculls shafts are made hollow but we are still able to offer solid shafts.
Skiff Sculls - choice of hollow, solid or girder (cut away at the sides) shafts with needle blades. The blade tips are made of ash for additional strength and durability.
They are fixed brass plates with leather sleeve and stop.
Rowing Oars - 'D' shape shaft to fit the gate and with Macon Blades.
Coastal Oars - 'D' shape shaft with Needle Blades.
